The best advice on modifying & using Google Sites was the Google Sites FAQ on the ‘unofficial Google sites help’ site.

nvnews discusses creating a custom themed site (fairly rudimentary) in 15 mins…
Overall though I find it a little odd that most of the news found on google regarding google sites is from 2009, & hardly anything seems to exist after that… has this not caught on?

Get Started With Google Refine 2.0

Data nerds rejoice!  Google has gifted the world with the latest version of its new product, Google Refine 2.0.  Google Refine is a spinoff from the Freebase acquisition that occurred in July of 2010. Freebase developed a strong following among its user base, which included many media outlets such as the Chicago Tribune, ProPublica and many others. The Google Refine blog touts its latest offering as “…a power tool for working with messy data sets, including cleaning up inconsistencies, transforming them from one format into another, and extending them with new data from external web services or other databases.”

TheDataRevolution.com team is really excited about the impact that Google Refine will have on the data visualization community.  The functionality offered by Google Refine is paramount and provides the user with a simple interface with powerful data manipulation capabilities.  I am always a big fan of testing new tools in real-world scenarios, so I decided to put transform to the test with a dataset that a co-worker and I were working with recently. I found a data dump of over 60,000 UFO sighting reports that was in utter disarray and was virtually unusable. I solicited Ryan Boyles to develop a script to sanitize the data which, in total, took about 45 minutes to get the data into a proper format

Utilizing Google Refine I was able to replicate the work of his script in about 15 minutes! This number is including the time it took me to figure out how Refine works, so it is a very powerful tool indeed.

Google Transparency Report

Like other technology and communications companies, we regularly receive requests from government agencies around the world to remove content from our services, or provide information about users of our services and products. This map shows the number of requests that we received in six-month blocks with certain limitations.

very interesting

like wow. this is SUCH AN AMAZING tool for cleaning up datasets!

the question is, does google keep track of what statistics you’re investigating…?

and if it keeps track, which would be consistent with google’s other data collecting habits, what might it use this little nugget of info for…?

Google Ngrams

rise of information & data

Above: the rise of ‘information’ and ‘data’ in literature indexed by Google Books. With Google’s new tool Ngram Viewer, you can visualise the rise and fall of particular keywords across 5 million books and 500 years! The tool is case sensitive, hence why I’ve included both the capitalised and lower case versions of each term.  The full graphic of my search is accessible via this link

I was introduced to Ngrams via David McCandless’ Information is Beautiful site, and his own experiments with the tool.

web trends map 4

The Web Trend Map plots the Internet’s leading names and domains onto the Tokyo Metro map. Domains and personalities are carefully selected through dialogue with map enthusiasts, and every domain is evaluated based on traffic, revenue, and character.

We grouped together closely associated websites, ensuring that every domain is on an appropriate line. As a result, the map produces a web of associations: some provocative, some curious, others ironically accurate.
